Shawnita Sealy Jefferson wanted to be her authentic self, everywhere - but couldn't articulate what that meant.

When Dr. Sealy Jefferson joined the Pillars of Genius™ program, she felt she was living with a double consciousness.  She wanted to be her authentic self everywhere, but couldn't articulate what that meant.  The Pillars of Genius™ program provided her the unique  methodology and personal coaching that transformed her from being unable to articulate who she was, to being unapologetic about who she is, what her purpose is, and how she shows up in the world.

Dr. Shawnita Sealy Jefferson,
Assistant Professor
The Ohio State University

Dr. Sealy-Jefferson is a social epidemiologist whose primary research seeks action to combat manifestations of structural racism that limit the human rights of Black families and communities. Dr. Sealy-Jefferson is the Founder, Director, and Principal Investigator of the Social Epidemiology to Eliminate Disparities (SEED) Lab. The mission of the SEED Lab is to conduct high quality epidemiologic research to find solutions to the disproportionate burden of infant mortality among Black women. The goal of her scholarship is to inform future intervention studies, policy change, and social activism.

Why did you join the Pillars of Genius™ program?

"I was a new faculty member, in an uncomfortable geographic location, who was becoming more of herself, but couldn't articulate what that meant.

I saw the unfolding, but I was living with a double consciousness, and I wanted to be my authentic self, everywhere."

What are the biggest outcomes the Pillars of Genius™ program helped you achieve?

"To be unapologetic about who I am, what my purpose is, and how I show up in the world (especially in academic spaces)."

"Professionally, I got a job at an institution more compatible with who I am, and my research interests - I was able to articulate what makes me different, and how these differences are an asset to the university, school, and department.

I also had an epiphany about the paradox of an epidemiologist who calculates odds for a living, but who believes the odds against her don't matter, ha! I think I have the title of my forthcoming memoir."

"I got a job at an institution more compatible with who I am, and my research interests - I was able to articulate what makes me different, and how these differences are an asset to the university, school, and department.  I got *everything* I asked for in the negotiations."

- Shawnita Sealy Jefferson, Assistant Professor

What specifically changed for you as a result of the Pillars of Genius™ program?

"I went back on the job market after two years on the tenure track at a R1 institution, and received and accepted an offer to join the faculty at a Big Ten University and got *everything* I asked for in negotiations.

I made the connection between one of my Pillars of Genius™, and my habit of finding and inviting Black undergrad and graduate students out to lunch and speaking into their lives. I have increased the frequency with which I do this

Before this program, I would hesitate to voice my feelings about racial injustices, in certain academic spaces. I have zero reservations now. I speak truth to power even if my voice shakes."

What do other faculty members need to know about the Pillars of Genius™ program?

"This program can help you see clearly the ways in which you are an asset to your department, university, and discipline.

Also, you will also get clear on who you should and should not be collaborating with, mentoring, and supervising."
